‘07 Tournament

 

The inaugural Gosport FatBoy 7’s took place on Saturday 11th August in glorious sunshine. Due to pre-season commitments many teams pulled out at late notice, however the teams that entered made full use of the weather to put on a fantastic show of open running (walking!) rugby. The rule that all players underweight wore fancy dress seemed not to be understood by the Norfolk and Chance team, who had of their underweight players in normal kit, and those over the limit in fancy-dress– although seeing the Gosport 1st XV 2nd rows together in ladies silk pyjama’s is a sight that won’t be forgotten in a while!

The handicap system that was put in place took 7 points off for each stone underweight a player was, and added 10 points for any player over 23 stone, whilst trying to take age into account too. Any player over the age of 35 got a bonus 10 points, over 40 a bonus 15 points and over 50 a bonus 20 points. The Oompaloompa’s team took full advantage of this by all of the squad being over 35, and having at 3 over fifty!

The Seven Stadlens were the only team to start each game on an even footing - with the Oompaloompa’s starting each game 57 points up, whilst Norfolk and Chance (Gosport & Fareham’s 1st XV entrants) starting 68 points down. Bagpuss’s Bitches started 106 points down in each game whilst Father Abraham’s Fat Seven Son’s starting with a 102 point deficit. Norfolk and Chance were then fined an additional 30 points for playing an unregistered player (who happened to be a winger!), although by that stage they realised they weren’t going to win the Cup.

The Plate final appeared to be the best match of the day between Father Abraham’s Fat 7 Sons and Norfolk and Chance with the match starting with only 4 points difference, although once the Cup Final started Seven Stadlens proved that they were a match for anybody with their running rugby pushing the Oompaloompa’s all the way.
